When members of the school community of the 3rd Middle School in Przemysl got to know that the editorial staff of the Cracow’s edition of „Gazeta Wyborcza” along with the Museum of Japanese Art and Technology „Manggha” in Cracow had organised a special event – a gesture of solidarity with Japan – one thousand folded paper cranes, which would later be sent to the city of Kesennuma – they spontaneously decided to signify their approval to that idea. Without hesitation, they started folding and managed to fold 1111 cranes. Each of them was folded with great involvement, sometimes maybe a bit clumsily and amateurish, but one thing was certain – it was a gift of their hearts. It has joined together the whole community and emotions could not be overstated.
Paper birds, a symbol of happiness and longevity for the Japanese, were created during arts and crafts lessons, educational hours as well as during spare time. The work was co-ordinated by Ms. Ewa Prajzner, the leader of the School Origami Interest Group, which has existed since several years in the 3rd Middle School in Przemysl.
Even though the event was directed to citizens of Cracow, pupils from Przemysl also wanted to add a bit of their huge support to the Japanese – faced with the destructive cataclysm. City borders
became in this case insignificant, incapable of stopping the people’s sensibility and empathy. Geographically distant Kesennuma, entirely destroyed by the earthquake and the tsunami wave, has
become so close to Polish thoughts and hearts.
Let paper cranes, which joined together good willing people of Poland, give hope and strength to those, who realise they are not alone. We think about them and we remember.
